Too Heavenly Minded...
...to be any earthly good. It's a saying we've all heard used. Too many people think it makes good sense, that it's actually possible and problematic to be "too heavenly minded". The Lord says otherwise. Take a look at Colossians 3:1-2
. The English Standard Version of the Bible says:
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
In Philippians chapter three, we are told not only that our citizenship is in heaven, but Paul also writes:
For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
Paul writes this to believers in the midst of urging them to accept him and not those of whom he speaks as an example. To believers about believers, hence Paul's tears. Look, the Enemy knows, better than most believers do, that the opposite of truth isn't lie. The opposite of truth is error. Lies are included, of course, but so are errors, mistakes, falling for deceptions, and sometimes ignorance. The Enemy will do all he can do to convince you that the battlefield is anything and anywhere but where and what it is. He will weave any deception that you would fall for just to keep you, the believer, off-track. Error.
In other words, the Enemy wants our focus on anything but the proper truth. If he can convince believers to live from earth towards heaven, being "realistic" and earthly-minded, thinking they need to plead and beg the Lord for their needs, then he has disabled them from truly victorious living. We are to live as God sees us, from heaven towards earth. Don't you remember that the Word says "as he [Jesus] is, so are we in this world:"? So, how is he? He is sitting at the right hand of God, in the throne room, not broke but having all things, not ill or diseased but triumphant, whole, resurrected, glorified. Occasionally some believers will get excited about our privilege to "boldly come before the throne of Grace", like it's a once-in-a-while deal, some thing we can perform when we're "just right", or the church service has been good enough. Who said anything about leaving that throne room once we have gained entry? We are supposed to live there, while occupying our place here...
Do not think earthly thoughts in an earthly way. Be aware of what being the Kingdom of God means, of what citizenship in heaven means. Listen, the "enemy" is not Islam, not the President (you should all be praying for him, not against- it's in the Book), not crime, nor the economy, socialism, the government, gays, Catholics, or anything else believers have been told is a "threat to our freedom and our way of life". No, that's just error. We are supposed to invade the culture of whatever earth-country of which we are temporary citizens , affecting them, influencing them, winning them into the Kingdom. The Kingdom of Heaven can not be under threat from the lost of this world. Can you see how absurd that is? And it comes from not understanding our place; from heaven, towards earth.
You have been given the mind of Christ; if you hadn't, you would not be told to submit every thought to it. Ask the Lord, he will grant you this: ask to have all your thoughts, beforehand, submitted to the mind of Christ. Ask to be given these three things; his vision, his thoughts, and his understanding. Ask to be given revelation of what it means to be the Bride of Christ, what it means to be "his body on the earth". You'll find soaring victory will follow.
